First, What is even a Game?

First, let’s define what a game is. A game is like that fun adventure you embark on with rules to follow, all in pursuit of a goal, and, of course, it’s gotta be playful! Now, if you take the playfulness out of a game, it turns into a chore. Ever tried memorising or studying something and struggled? but then you added a sweet reward for reaching the end of a chapter? Suddenly, it felt less like a chore and more like a quest with an awaiting treasure chest to be opened. That’s what we call ‘gamification,’ changing rules or/and chores into something fun, aspiring and playful, thus, turning it into a game.

Are we all Natural Game Players?
Playfulness isn’t just human; it’s universal! Kids and animals alike learn while having a blast. It’s how they learn, explore, and understand their world. Play is like our secret language with the universe, a way of being human. For example:
Animals:
  • Dogs, lions and other animals may play through pretend fighting. They bite one another lightly as they wag their tail, this prepares them for protecting and hunting.
  • Many animals including canids, felines and even some primates enjoy chasing games like tag, learning agility and coordination
  • Some animals like to use objects for playing games like, Bears and Birds sometimes like sliding down slopes and dogs and cats like catching balls
Humans:
  • So that children learn structures lessons easier e.g. the alphabet, fun and rythmic tunes are made to make memorisation easier.
  • Playing football is another way in which humans maintain a healthy life style, since football contains a lot of running, physical struggle against another player, jumping and many other forms of exercising.
  • Humans also play games through social interaction, they can come in forms of telling jokes, telling stories and role-playing.
There are many more ways of playing, and sometimes it becomes an official game. So, knowing that games and play are a fundamental part of our lives, that even children play without being taught, it’s natural that Islam would give games the green light. The better question might be, how could games and play ever be ‘haram’ (forbidden)? Now, think about it. Back in the day, there were no PlayStation 5 or smartphone games, but the concept of games and play has been around forever, evolving with time. Games are just a way for us to embrace that playfulness. And guess what? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was no stranger to playfulness and games either.

Even The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

Let’s take a fun example: Racing! We all love a good race with friends, right? Well, so did the Prophet. His wife, Aisha, once outraced him, and they had a good laugh about it. Later, they raced again, and he won. Then he said, ‘This cancels that’. In other words, ‘We’re even now!’ (in a playful way, of course). (The actual hadith is reported by Abu Dawood)  Ibn Kathir (Tafsir Ibn Kathir 4:19) said: “It was the character of the Prophet to live in a beautiful manner with his wives, being cheerful and kind to them, generously spending on them, and laughing with them”.

Racing is one game amongst others that the prophet Muhammad played, He enjoyed other forms of playfulness too. He enjoyed making jokes and laughing at them, he enjoyed poetry, in other words, a play on words. Despite there being various ways that the prophet played, few people at the time could compete with with the Prankster Nuayman, a companion of the prophet that loved to play, in particular, play pranks on people including on the Prophet Muhammad pbuh.

So , Playing Games is Halal then?

In conclusion, playing games and having a good time is perfectly halal (permissible) in Islam, as long as it doesn’t take over your obligations, well-being, character, and dignity. There may be some other specifics which muslims should stay away from that are in games, but generally, the Prophet himself laughed and played with his family and companions, and there are tales of epic pranks (seriously, you modern pranksters have nothing on The prophets companion ‘Nuayman’)!

So, go ahead, play those games, enjoy life, and don’t forget to smile. Just remember to strike a balance between fun and seriousness in your life. Now, let’s level up and enjoy some halal gaming!
