Are games halal in Islam? The short and sweet answer: YES! But hold on to your controllers because there’s more to this delightful story. Let’s dive into why games are not only permissible but also a playful part of our lives.

First, What is even a game?

First, let’s define what a game is. A game is like that fun adventure you embark on with rules to follow, all in pursuit of a goal, and, of course, it’s gotta be playful! Now, if you take the playfulness out of a game, it turns into a chore. Ever tried memorizing something and struggled? but then you added a sweet reward or a milkshake treat for reaching the end of a chapter? Suddenly, it felt less like a chore and more like a quest with a golden pot at the rainbow’s end. That’s what we call ‘gamification,’ making things fun and playful, thus, turning it into a game.

Why we need games and play

Are we all natural game players?

Playfulness isn’t just human; it’s universal! Kids and animals alike are happiest when they’re having a blast. It’s how they learn, explore, and understand their world. Play is like our secret language with the universe, a way of being human.

So, knowing that games and play are fundamental in our existence, it’s clear that Islam gives them the green light. The better question might be, how could they ever be ‘haram’ (forbidden)?

Now, think about it. Back in the day, there were no PlayStation 5 or smartphone games, but the concept of games and play has been around forever, evolving with time. Games are just a way for us to embrace that playfulness. And guess what? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was no stranger to playfulness either.

How can games be ‘Haram’.

Let’s take a fun example: Racing! We all love a good race with friends, right? Well, so did the Prophet. His wife, Aisha, once outraced him, and they had a good laugh about it. Later, when she had put on a bit of weight, they raced again, and he won. Then he said, ‘This cancels that’. In other words, ‘We’re even now!’ (in a playful way, of course). (The actual hadith is reported by Abu Dawood) Ibn Kathir (Tafsir Ibn Kathir 4:19) said: “It was the character of the Prophet to live in a beautiful manner with his wives, being cheerful and kind to them, generously spending on them, and laughing with them”.

In conclusion, playing games and having a good time is perfectly halal (permissible) in Islam, as long as it doesn’t take over your obligations, well-being, character, and dignity. There may be some other specifics which muslims should stay away from that are in games, but generally, the Prophet himself laughed and played with his family and companions, and there are tales of epic pranks (seriously, you modern pranksters have nothing on The prophets companion ‘Nuayman’)!

This could be for various reasons but on the surface, many muslims find instruments to be impermissable and the use of music to be a form of emotional manipulation, often for bad reasons. Natural sounds like birds chirping, nature and people humming are often used as an alternative and to use music as a means to generate positive emotion.

Time Management!

Islam values time, and it’s all about spending it wisely. If gaming starts gobbling up so much of your time that you’re missing out on religious duties like prayers, that’s a red flag.

Battling Addiction!

Islam gives any addiction the cold shoulder. If you’re gaming to the point where your health, family, or other responsibilities take a hit, that’s a no-go.

Health Matters!

Excessive gaming that messes with your physical or mental well-being can raise eyebrows in the Islamic context.

Wallet Watch

Spending tons of money on games when you should be using those resources for essential needs or charitable acts? That’s considered irresponsible.
